Assignment 5C

1. MoLAA means the Museum of Latin American Art. It is a Museum where many Latin Americans exhibit their work. They have a collection that is a mixture of art work as well as they present a specific artist with all of their artwork in one area. The Knowledge I learned this semester has enhanced my understanding of the artwork found there because I learned at each artwork is representing a part of history. By learning some history one can be one with the paintings and understand what these artist were painting.

2.a.I could not find a title for this artwork.

2.c.I came across this piece of artwork because I went to the MoLAA website looking for an artist that had a past exhibition their. After finding Diego Rivera’s name on there I decided that I was going to look for a piece of artwork by him. I then went in looking at his paintings. I found this one and it reminded me of the Aztec’s therefore this is why I choose it. This painting shows that pyramids and the Aztec calendar.

2.d.Contains the following analytical elements:
I feel that the main focus in this painting is the Aztec calendar because the lines of the pyramid go towards the Aztec calendar making ones eyes travel to that part of the painting. I think that this painting is made with oils. Diego loved to do oil paintings and just by looking at this painting it looks like it to me. Not only were the lines from the pyramid used to guide ones eyes towards that Aztec calendar but also the color yellow that is coming out from behind the pyramid and going into circles to the Aztec calendar.

I think that this artwork is about the rise of the Aztec calendar.

The reason why I chose this artwork because it had to do with the Aztec’s. When I see this artwork it just makes be think that

1.Contains a title
“La Guadalupana” on you tube

2.Contains a web link to the actual piece (art, photo, architecture, pottery, etc.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TctidBWtv9c

3.When I was doing component A I did not come across this piece, but I did further research to get this. Since December 12th is right around the corner, at my church they handed out the songs that will be sung on that day. This was one of the songs and I decided to write about this. This connects to my study of humanities because “La Virgen de Guadalupe” is like a shrine to every Mexican. A flag with her image was carried by soldiers during war.

4.Contains the following analytical elements:

a.In the lyrics, of this song I see that they refer to the Tepeyac, which is where the first apparition happened. This is where Juan Diego saw her. The lyrics also mention Juan Diego, also about this being all Mexicans lady. This work is made of love, appreciation and words.
b.These lyrics are about what we, Mexicans, believe our lady is. It shows how much we care about her and how much she means not only to each individual but to the country as a whole.
c.The reason why I choose this is because this is one of my favorite songs that we sing in “Las Mananitas” to our Virgin. When I heard this song on you tube I honestly got chills that ran throughout my body. This is a very emotional time period for all Mexicans, but for me especially because it is my great grandmothers birthday on December 12th. She has already passed away which makes this day very hard.
d.The reason I like this song is because it brings everyone closer together. People for all over the world are in a place singing to her becoming one instead of millions. I would love to know in greater detail everything that happen and how she became who she is. I would love to travel to Mexico City and go to the “Basilica” where her shrine is.

Assignment 5a

“Independence period” is when the Latin American Countries and the Caribbean gained independence from Spain. This occurred in the 19th century. The Independence period is also known as the Latin American Revolutions, which are known to be one of the most influential series of events in the history of the Western Hemisphere.

La Virgin of Guadalupe
1. She is a 16th century Roman Catholic Mexican icon. She is celebrated on December 12th, with the traditional appearances to Juan Diego on the Tepeyac hill near Mexico City.
2. The Virgin asked to Juan Diego to build a church in her name on the site that he saw her. When Juan Diego went to request this, they laughed in his face, little did they know that the Virgin was going to give him proof to present to him. She gave him flowers from the ground and the season was winter. Juan Diego then went to present them and as he showed them in his tilma the Virgin appeared imprinted on the cloth of the tilma.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-b6MqgR6Mzo <-- to view a short story, of the above
3. The Virgin has be a symbol of the Mexican nation since the was of independence. Both Miguel Hidalgo and Emiliano Zapata armies traveled underneath Guadalupan flags.

The reason that I choose this topic is because I know that she is celebrated on December 12th but I wanted to know more about her in greater detail. Also currently my boyfriend is painting a picture of her and it is coming out amazing therefore I was inspired.

Assignment 4a

The Colonial Period is between 1492-1810. This was the era that stands out as the era that shaped most of what is Latin America today. Explorers such a Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci made voyages of discovery to the New World. After that is when the conquistadors such as Hernan Cortez came and gave it a Spanish touch. Overall, this period was the period where Latin America started to improve.

So, decided to research the California Missions because it is great to find out things about the state you live in. Not only is this the reason, but since I am Catholic its great to research the Catholic missions.

The Spanish missions in California are religious places established by Spanish Catholics between 1769 and 1823 to spread the Catholic faith among the local Native Americans. These missions were established to colonize this area by the Europeans. Not only were these Natives introduced to livestock livestock, fruits, vegetables, and industry but not everything is great and had some negatives that cam along. Sadly to say that in the end, these missions failed their purpose. Even though they failed to convert the Natives into who they wanted them to become, these missions are among the oldest structures and the most-visited historic monuments.

List of the Missions:

Mission San Diego de Alcala (1769)
Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo (1770)
Mission San Antonio de Padua (1771)
Mission San Gabriel Arcángel (1771)
Mission San Luis Obispo (1772)
Mission San Francisco de Asís (1776)
Mission San Juan Capistrano (1776)
Mission Santa Clara de Asís (1777)
Mission San Buenaventura (1782)
Mission Santa Barbara (1786)
Mission La Purisíma Concepción (1787)
Mission Santa Cruz (1791)
Mission Nuestra Señora de la Soledad (1791)
Mission San José (1797)
Mission San Juan Bautista (1797)
Mission San Miguel de Arcángel (1797)
Mission San Fernando Rey de España (1797)
Mission San Luis Rey de Francia (1798)
Mission Santa Inés (1804)
Mission San Rafael Arcángel (1817)
Mission San Francisco de Solano (1823)

I think that these are credible sources because I found similar information on other websites but these websites in my opinion are easier to understand the content that is being stated.

Isaac A Vargas Gonzalez
This classmate is from Latino America like I am and I find it interesting that we are taking the class. The reason behind it is because I think our culture is so interesting itself that we want to learn more out there. He is taking this class because he wants to transfer to a four year and this fits in one of the prerequisite requirements.
Through this student I learn that Paulo Freire studied law but was dedicated to education. Also I learned that he was a professor at Harvard University.

Jade Gonzalez
My fellow classmate Jade is taking this class for her A.A. I feel this student is on the right path and I like her thinking. She not only said it was for her A.A. but said, “It looked really interesting and I figured I might as well choose a class about something that interests me.” I think this is really important in succeeding in certain courses.
Jade talk about how Paulo Freire has many Institutes around the world but the first was established in 1991 in Sao Paulo. The main headquarters is at the UCLA Graduate School of Information Studies.

Assignment 1b

Paulo Freire is a Brazilian, whom speaks Portuguese. I was able to identify this language even before I read his biography. Parts of his works came from his knowledge when he was part of the great depression era. He was born middle class but through the great depression was able to come up with some ideas. Freire married a teacher, whom worked together for the rest of their lives. Even though they were busy they raised five children.

Freire published his first book, with the name of Education as the Practice of Freedom. A year later he published his second and most famous book in Portuguese Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Later his book was published in Spanish and English. Due to this book, many doors opened for him. He was going all over the world to teach his findings.

Freire best know concept of education was the “banking.” Reason for this was that like a bank account, students are empty and teachers are therefore responsible to fill them up with ideas, “deposits.” He believed that dialog was extremely important because this way everyone is involved.
